Interior design royalty, waiters channeling geek-chic and book-smart details—yep, just another successful year for Legends, La Cienega Design Quarter’s annual spotlight on architecture, home, fashion and art. This year marked the second year TypeA has been invited to attend with our client, Coldwell Banker Previews International—co-sponsors of the 2014 event. Socializing isn’t exactly our quiet founder’s strong suit, but she was flanked by her design-savvy partners in crime who mixed and mingled with the well-heeled “who’s who” of design from New York and Los Angeles.
The invitation-only gala at antique showroom Therian was, for lack of a better word, jam-packed. Like literally. In fact, we’re pretty sure we rubbed shoulders with Vivienne Westwood and brushed against Bravo’s “Million Dollar Decorators” Martyn Lawrence Bullard, ever dapper in jacket, vest and scarf. (Sorry Martyn!) We were particularly inspired by the funky West Coast-East Coast vibe of the gala, which seemed more pronounced this year. Of course, it very well could have been due to the event’s theme: “Novel Interiors: Storytelling by Design.” Waiters looked more like librarians with black thick-rimmed glasses as they passed around Louis Roederer champagne on trays with novels ingeniously set between glass. NYC intellectualism mixed with L.A. experimentalism. That’s how we’d sum up the event.
The trend-watching, of course, continued throughout the rest of the week with panels, such as “Glamour: A Timeless Narrative” moderated by Architectural Digest’s West Coast editor Mayer Rus and “Don’t Hate, Collaborate,” a discussion with Martyn Lawrence Bullard, Kathryn Ireland, Nathan Turner and Jeffrey Alan Marks. There were also plenty of design meet-and-greets, book signings, sneak peeks and inspiration in the showrooms along La Cienega Boulevard to satisfy the design geeks. And antiquarian Lee Stanton’s interactive antiques vignette also proved that the selfie is not just a social media phenomenon reserved for the Kim Kardashians of the world; it has a place in the design world too.
Another successful legends event. Another successful year. Until next time…
